Walking the Nakasendo: Why Travelers Come to Kiso

For many international travelers staying at ties, the main reason for visiting Kiso is simple: they want to walk the Nakasendo.

The Nakasendo was one of the historic routes connecting Edo, present-day Tokyo, and Kyoto during the Edo period.

Today, travelers can walk sections of this old route and experience traditional post towns, mountain forests, small villages, and a very different side of Japan.

One of the most popular areas is the route between Magome and Tsumago.

Tsumago is especially well known for its beautifully preserved traditional streets and historic atmosphere.

After a day of walking through the mountains and old post towns, Nagiso is a wonderful place to slow down.

And this is where ties comes in.

Rather than staying in a busy tourist area, you can spend the evening surrounded by nature, enjoy a meal, relax around a campfire, and wake up in the quiet Kiso mountains.

The Nakasendo is not only about walking from one destination to another.

It is about slowing down and experiencing a different side of Japan.
